Those headed to NYC for the first time have many surprises ahead. One of the most notable things that make it different than anywhere else is the layout of the city itself. If you’re only staying a short while, being in a place that’s not best-suited for you is usually just a minor annoyance. However, if you’re in the process of selecting a long-term rental in New York City, it’s important you choose the area that fits your needs best. The city is broken into five major boroughs, each with its own unique character and benefits.
The Bronx
If NYC was a clock, The Bronx would be at 12 o’clock. It’s one of the most economically-friendly of the five boroughs. The area has seen a huge amount of growth recently and is incredibly diverse. Most people who live there commute for work and social activities, primarily using the subway. The Bronx has been referred to as the friendliest of the boroughs and is also where Yankee Stadium resides.
Queens
Queensis located south of The Bronx. It’s one of the most culturally diverse places in the US and tends to draw people hoping for a bit more space. Living in Queens does require additional commuting for both business and pleasure. Both La Guardia and JFK airports are located there.
Brooklyn
Brooklynsits to the west of Queens. It’s one of the most sought-after places to live in the entire US. In terms of people searching for or living in long-term rentals in New York City, it’s second only to Manhattan. It hosts an urban feel, with plenty of cultural activities and museums. It’s also home to Coney Island.
Staten Island
Staten Island is farther off to the west, divided from the other boroughs by the New York Bay and tends to be easier on the wallet. People often settle there to get away from city life, while still being able to reach the larger boroughs via bus or ferry.
Manhattan
Manhattan comes up along the west side of The Bronx, completing the clock form. It’s one of the most difficult markets to get into, though there are some neighborhoods that are a little more affordable than others. Each neighborhood has a culture and feel of its own. Notable Manhattan areas include SoHo, Tribeca and Harlem, as well as Central Park. Due to the high volume of people who commute to Manhattan for work, the population nearly triples during the day. Night life is still very busy, though, and you’re likely to find anything you want, 24 hours a day, within the borough.
The real estate market is booming and long-term rentals in New York City require a little legwork to choose the area that’s right for you. Start by looking over the boroughs and then individual neighborhoods to ensure your new place is everything you desire.
